What are Essential Oils?

Essential oils are natural volatile aromatic compounds found in some seeds, bark, roots, stems, flowers, resin and plants.

Pure, potent essential oils offer fantastic benefits for physical, mental and emotional health and well-being.

Pure essential oils can be used safely by anyone of any age.

You can use oils in endless ways: Sleep, Digestion, Stress, Mood, Pain, Beauty, Weight, Cellular Health, Immune, Green Cleaning, Nutrition, Pets, Skin, Emotions, Athletic Performance, Focus & Concentration, Study, Toxins, and more…

3 ways to use essential oils

1. Through smell. We call this “aromatic” use of essential oils. This includes any application method that helps you experience the aroma of the oil. You can use essential oils aromatically by:

  • Diffusing in an essential oil diffuser

  • Applying a drop to your hands and inhaling

  • Wearing as a personal fragrance on your pulse points, neck or collarbones

2. On your skin. “Topical” application of essential oils allows the oil to absorb into the skin. Some ways to use essential oils on your skin are:

  • Massage

  • Apply to targeted areas and rub in

  • Add to oil, lotions or moisturisers

  • Apply to reflexology points on the hands and/or feet

3. Ingesting, or “internal” use of essential oils allows the oil to be transported throughout your body. Make sure the essential oil is safe for internal use first, and then try one of these methods:

  • Add to a glass of water

  • Take in a veggie capsule

  • Put a drop under your tongue

Did you know? (a few cool geeky Oil facts!)

  1. Only 1-2 drops are enough. You would need to drink 28 cups of peppermint tea to get the benefits of just 1 drop of peppermint oil?

  2. It takes 10 lbs of peel to produce one 15ml bottle of pure Wild Orange Essential oil but it takes 10,000 blossoms to make a 5ml bottle of Rose oil. This is why prices vary depending on the oil.

  3. doTERRA means ‘Gift of the Earth’ and the company has a culture of caring and kindness. In 2020, doTERRA celebrated 10 years of work through the Healing Hands Organisation. You can read more about this HERE. doTERRA also gives back by through emergency relief, Wellness Advocate initiated projects and Co-Impact Sourcing initiatives. Read HERE.

  4. Oils are wonderful for supporting emotions: After smelling a pure essential oil, it takes only 21 seconds for that oil to begin to impact your mood via the limbic area in your brain.

  5. After being applied to the skin, it takes essential oils about 2 minutes to be absorbed and appear in your bloodstream. From there, they are carried by the bloodstream to every cell in the body within about 20 minutes.

  6. There are no quality-control labelling requirements for essential oils. Even those labeled as “100% pure” need only to contain 5% of the actual oil. The rest of the bottle can be filled with fillers and ingredients that can be toxic to the body & irritating to the skin.

  7. Sesquiterpenes are found in some essential oils. They have the ability to pass through the blood-brain barrier (it is difficult for drugs to do this) and are know for calming, grounding and balancing the emotions. Oils containing sesquiterpenes are: Melissa, helichrysum, black pepper, vetiver, cedarwood, patchouli, ginger, ylang ylang and myrrh.

  8. Less than 1 percent of the entire plant species population produces essential oil.

  9. Historical records of essential oil use date back to the ancient Chinese and Egyptians. The Bible has almost 200 references to essential oils like, spikenard, rosemary, myrrh & frankincense. Hippocrates used essential oils to treat patients.

  10. Because essential oil molecules are so tiny, they can pass through cellular walls, offering cellular benefits. Unfortunately, because of these same tiny molecules, an open essential oil bottle will evaporate quite quickly! (Close your bottles!)

There is really no right or wrong way to use essential oils. What we really want to focus on is consistency of use and using the right amount.
